Tips to Higher Free, Organic Google Positions

Google is one of the most popular Web search engines at this time. But getting your site indexed is just one step to getting promoted by Google. You need to improve your ranking in order to show up higher in the Google search results so that people actually find your site. While there are no "magic bullets" to improving your Google rankings, there are ways to help make sure that your site looks okay to the Googlebot. Combine this with some luck and some cross linking and you'll get higher ranking in Google.

Google SEO Dos

  1. First, make sure your page has a keyword descriptive <title> tag, that relates to page text and picture names. I did a search for "Untitled" on Google and came up with more than 11 million hits. The title tag is also the header used in your Google listing, so make it one that will encourage viewers to click and visit your site.
  2. Your site should have a clear hierarchy. This means that headings, with keywords, should follow in order from h1 to h2 and so on.
  3. Have a strong introductory paragraph on your site. This should not only explain what your page is about to new readers but also contain the keywords and information about them that you want to focus on.
  4. All pages on you site should have text links to them, not just graphic button links. The Google Bot can't 'see' your graphic buttons. And it helps if those text links say something other than "click here", a better one would be "click here for [keyword]" or "more [keyword] info".
  5. Remember that it is possible to show only titles in Google search results, and 11 million is a hard number to rank high among.
  6. Make sure your page code doesn't have errors or any dead links.
  7. Always write your pages for your readers, not for Google.
  8. Request reciprocal links from other keyword related websites - ie. sites that are in your same industry or have similar keywords. Of course competitors aren't a good choice for obvious reasons, but related businesses or manufacturers. With links to your site Google looks for them to be about similar information and the better those sites position in Google and the more visitors they get, the more weight or value Google gives to them linking to you. And remember don't have the link text only show www.yourdomain.com instead something like www.yourdomain.com keyword phrase, like www.ProtetAChild.com Pool Fences.
  9. Offer your readers a site map of your site. But make sure that it has less than 100 links per page.
  10. And, Google loves videos, due to their popularity. They bring a personal, humanized element to a technical world. They allow visitors to size up and get a feel for who they are considering doing business with. Videos should be short when possible, 1-5 minutes is fine, and topic specific. Longer videos can be divided into topic specific shorter ones. Have the video pull up in your web page, so Google sees it there and visitors don't leave your site. A screen area alongside a bulleted list of videos that can be clicked on works great for SEO and visitors love it. If you host with Bluewater Internet we can add video very inexpensively.
  11. And, Google loves blogs too, due to their constantly fresh information. Blogs are just current info, sometimes pictures, links, that someone in the owner posts on a regular basis. Some daily, some weekly. Its a great way for otherwise busy, bright people to communicate helpful knowledge to the masses in a way that doesn't take much time. If you host with Bluewater Internet we have blog packages with many styles that we can install the same day and turn live as soon as you are ready. You can also configure them to allow visitor comments (which can be set to wait for your approval before going live), or to allow more than one employee to add entries. You can also have more than one blog on a site.

Aside from a site with good, 'keyworded' content and internal links, the competitive key to getting high rankings in Google is to get lots of keyword related sites to link to you. The more that link to you with keywords, and the more "important" they are in the Googlebot world, the higher you will rank for keywords.

There are also some things you should never do, as Google might ban your domain completely from their records.

Google SEO Don'ts

  1. Don't try to hide text or links, such as by writing text the same color as the background color or within comment tags. Text needs to be visible to your readers for the Googlebot to consider it.
  2. Don't cloak your site. This is a technique where devious people send Google and other search engine bots to a different page than their typical readers go to.
  3. Don't fill your pages with irrelevant words. Having words multiple times on a page won't improve your ranking, and if they don't make sense in the context of the page, you'll annoy your readers as well as hurt your ranking.
  4. Don't use automated programs to query Google. This impacts their bandwidth with no improvement of service to their users. It's also against their terms and conditions.
  5. Don't be deliberately misleading or deceptive. From the Google site: "Google may respond negatively to other misleading practices not listed..." If you think you've found a loophole in Google, it's a bad idea to use it.
Google engineer Matt Cutts, who’s quite popular with the techies, offered some simple yet great advice on how to make your website easier to find by your prospective customers.

Here’s a quick summary of what he says to USA Today in his interview:

1. Add “keywords” to your site’s content; keywords are the words you think people will use to find your site when they use a search engine. The more keywords you use in your content, the easier your site will be to find.

2. Title Tags and Description Tags are the information Google displays about your website in the results page.

3. The more people that link to your website the better. People will link to your content if it’s interesting and of value. (By the way, please link to me!)

4. Advertising on Google does not get you preferred treatment. You will not rank higher in the free results because you advertise.

5. Normally, Google refreshes its entire inventory once a month. This means that Google may visit your site to look for new content every 30 days. However, don’t wait a month for Google to visit your site; submit your site to Google at http://www.google.com/addurl.

I’m not the best person to summarize interviews, but if you liked the tips above, I’d recommend taking time to watch the five-minute video interview and hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.
